Public concern for abandoned animals vs. public acceptance for partial birth abortion of children

Harris County in Texas which includes the city of Houston supports, at tax payer expense, an office of  The Society for The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. There is a popular t.v. program based on the work of this worthy cause.  There are special officers who investigate complaints; squad cars and large trucks that transport dogs, cats, goats and horses from the places where they have been abused or abandoned by their owners to veteranarian clinics where evaluation and surgery can take place. There is no question that the animals need help in order to save their lives. The thing that stands out in these real life situations is the compassion and concern that is exhibited by all concerned. When the animals are fit once again they are put up for adoption where the focus is, "on finding them a loving home".

On the other hand The Supreme Court of The United States ruled in the case of Roe vs Wade in 1973   that it was constitutional  in our country to abort the life of an unborn child. in the last thirty seven years  about fifty million children have had their lives taken from them because, in the final analysis, it is inconvenient for the parents to have their child brought to full term and to be born. It is said that a woman has the right over her own body and for the sake of her health she comes first before the innocent life of the child and further that she has the right to choose. The fifth Commandment states, "Thou shall not kill" and we believe that we are a free people with the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  But we are not free to kill, especially a defenseless baby who has no choice in his death.

The situation of abortion is bad enough but it is much worse when the child is brought to full term and is brought forth from his mother's womb except for his head which is kept inside the womb with the rest of his body outside. The child  has a syringe inserted in his neck and his brain is sucked out so that the head can be collapsed and he is dead. This is called,"partial birth abortion". The U.S. Congress has voted several times to prevent this gruesome proceedure but the President has vetoed their vote. President Clinton did this twice.

Abortion  in the United States has become a billion dollar industry with Planned Parenthood gaining a 25% percent share of the market. The market in infant body parts is enormous with fetal tissue being used in the cosmetics industry. In past presidential elections at least 53% of Catholics have voted for the candidate that supports abortion.

Why is there such a disconnect in the moral outlook of americans who love animals and support the SPCA with their tax dollars but who are willing to be a part of a movement that slaughters children?  It is a breakdown in the moral code that accepts abortion and also accepts contraception. Things go down hill from there. The Catholic Church is the only body that can change this. The Bishops and their clergy are sitting on the fence. It's time they put a stop to this with their whole might. The first commandment is, "You shall love the Lord your God, with your whole mind, your whole soul and all your strength".

Hi, my name is Samantha Yeo. May I know what is the public concern over abortion?:)

Dear Samantha: There are two opinions about abortion. The first is the objection to the taking of a human life by killing the baby in its mothers womb. Partial birth abortion is the killing of a fully formed child while the body is out of the womb but the head remains inside. A syringe is put in the lower skull and the brain is sucked out. The second opinion is that the woman has a choice which overrides the rights of the child. It's a complicated question but it results in murder of a child who is deprived of rights. Thanks for your question. Fr. Corcoran
