Respect Life, Abortion, Contraception, and Mass attendance

The month of October begins on Thursday of this week. Our bishops in conjunction with the secretariat for Pro-life activities of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops have designated October as Respect Life month, throughout the Dallas Diocese and the nation. This coming January 22nd marks the 37st anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court Decision named Roe vs. Wade which declared it constitutionally lawful for a woman to obtain an abortion of the child, her child, conceived in her womb. This is against God’s law and is morally evil.

In Mark’s Gospel today Christ speaks clearly about the danger of sin especially where the young are concerned, by extension the Lord’s statement involves women who procure abortions those who facilitate one and those was performed them. An immoral law does not have to be obeyed and must be forcefully opposed.

Abortionists can make a great deal of money and those who have abortions are, for the most part, doing so because contraception failed, and they don’t want to be burdened with the responsibility and the added financial sacrifices. Jesus advises us to “store up for yourselves treasure in heaven”. But instead we do what St. James speaks of today, “weep and wail over your impending miseries. Your wealth has rotted away, your clothes have become moth eaten, your gold and silver have corroded, and that corrosion will be a testimony against you; it will devour your flesh like a fire.”

It is the family that brings us happiness in this life. The family is being assaulted by our culture of death.

During the thirty six years that abortion has been opposed by the Church and with Pro-life committees fifty million children have been murdered. Note, they are children, boys and girls, they are not just fetuses. That is an average of 1.4 million children killed each year, to this day, why is that?

The devil, Planned Parenthood and indifferentism are our enemies in this matter.

In the 1992 Supreme Court case Planned Parenthood vs. Casey, justice O’Connor wrote in the plurality opinion that the right to abortion could not be curtailed “without serious inequity to people who, for two decades of economic and social development have organized intimate relationship in reliance on the availability of abortion in the event that contraception should fail”.

The sacrament of matrimony is founded on two pillars, one is the unitive and the other is the procreative. Sexual activity is a gift for use within marriage only. If a married person has sex with someone other than their spouse the mortal sin of adultery has been committed. And if an unmarried person has sex with another single person it is the mortal sin of fornication. When a man and a woman exchange marriage vows they are promising to give themselves to each other without reservation, their whole selves. If in marriage contraception is used or sterilization is resorted to, the couple is living a lie. They are not trusting in God. They are not putting themselves in God’s hands. Love weakens and slowly dies and divorce often follows.

50% of marriages end in divorce including Catholic marriages. When family planning is used the divorce rate is 4%.

In November 2006 the nation’s bishops met in Baltimore. Two proposals were put forward and voted on. Both were approved, one was “Married love and the gift of life”, the other was “Happy are those who are called to His supper”. The last was on the worthy reception of Holy Communion.”

With regard to the document, “Married love and the gift of life” at the bottom of page 4 are these words: “but they (husband and wife) should never act to suppress or curtail the life giving power given by God that is an integral part of what they pledged to each other in their marriage vows. This is what the Church means by saying that every act of intercourse must remain open to life and that contraception is objectively immoral.” It is not immoral subjectively. That is because we think it is and that it would not be if we thought the contrary. But that it is so because God says it is, objectively.

In the document on the worthy reception of Holy Communion on page 10, it speaks of “the lack of adherence to Church teaching”. To hear the voice of the Church on matters of faith and morals is to hear the voice of Christ Himself.

To give selective assent only to the teachings of the Church not only deprives us of Her life giving message, but also seriously endangers our communion with Her. Reception of Holy Communion in such a situation would not accord with the nature of the Eucharistic Celebration so that he or she should refrain.

Married love and the gift of life refers to Pope Paul VI Encyclical Letter “Humane Vitae” promulgated by the Pope on July 25, 1968. It is part of the ordinary magisterium. Theologians who out of the sin of pride thought they knew more than the Pope and dissented from it. That act of defiance was the start of pick and chose Catholicism. What has it led to?

Finally, the third piece of evidence of the defiance of Church teaching is found in the statistics on Mass attendance. The figures in the Diocese of Dallas are that only 29% of registered Catholics go to Mass on Sunday. 71% do not. For Holy days of obligation it is 7-1/2%. This is true for Catholic Churches all over the country and has been true for some time. The Church teaches that missing Mass on Sundays and other Holy days of Obligation without a grave reason is a mortal sin. How did people let themselves get into this serious situation?

To use an example, Billy Brown was carefully and lovingly raised by his parents to obey the order of their home; to study and to be responsible to put the welfare of his parents and siblings ahead of his own, and to love God. When he was about thirteen he met Jimmy Jones. The two would pal around at school and after school would go to Jimmie’s house where Billy often stayed late, not coming home for dinner. Billie’s mother began to notice that his grades were falling and that he wasn’t helpful around the house. He did not keep his room tidy and was becoming rude to his family members. Finally Billie’s parents forbade him to associate with Jimmy as they discovered that Jimmie’s mother let him do as he pleased with no rules and no demands. Jimmy was unruly and Billy became like him. Billy had to make a decision would he listen to his mother or would he risk alienation? Would he risk losing his home? This is the position many Catholics are in today.

Their mother the Church loves them but they have followed someone else. Statistics tell us that one out of ten Americans is an ex-Catholic, that’s thirty million souls. We want them to come home but we can’t change the rules or we would be going over to the other side. Those who have remained in the Church but still don’t listen to their mother should think again. They have a decision to make, like did Billy.

After each of the three points we made was a question to abortion it was why is that? The answer is it is number two - artificial contraception. And to this question we asked what has this led to? The answer is number three. Not attending Mass on Sunday. It is the domino effect. The doctrine and teachings of Holy Mother Church on faith and morals must be accepted and lived totally and as a whole.

Where there is true repentance there can be God’s mercy, forgiveness and the abundance of grace.

The consideration of all these things must be seen in the light of the resurrection and of eternal life. God bless you and keep you.
